Lessons in classical, flamenco, and rock guitar in Erdington, Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield

If you live in or around the Erdington or Sutton Coldfield area of Birmingham and are looking for guitar lessons or tuition in both guitar and music theory then you have come to the right place.

There are a lot of guitar teachers out there but how can you decide which one to chose? well the answer is simpler than you may think. To find the answer to this dilemma, you must first ask yourself what it is you want from the teacher. If you are just looking for someone to give you a few pointers and teach you a few impressive riffs or licks to show your friends then it would be a safe bet that most if not all that are advertising near you will fit the bill; however, if you are looking to be come a serious musician and have hopes of playing with other musicians or maybe having a future career as session guitarist, join a professional band or even become a teacher yourself at some point then a little research must be done in order for you to select the teacher that's right for you.

At Musical Six Strings you will be tout by a classically trained virtuoso guitar teacher. who is not only a trained musician but also a trained teacher. You will be trained to the standards set out by the current musical examination authority and follow the same curriculum as used by the Trinity College of London. We cater for students that may just want to hone there current skills, learn a few party pieces or embark into a professionally structured course that sets out to take you through from grade initial through to grade eight. In the later scenario we not only train you to the highest standards expected by the qualifications board; we also arrange and support our students through each exam but what ever your requirements, you can always be rest assured that with Musical Six Strings you are being tout in the correct manner and not picking up someone else's bad habits.

We appreciate that not all pupils are comfortable carrying their instrument when using public transport and therefore are happy to provide the appropriate instrument on the premises.

About Me

Credentials:

Welcome to, Musical Six Strings. My name is David John Wootton; I have been in the music industry for more than 40 years. I had my first guitar at the age of 5 and instantly fell in love. I have pretty much had a guitar to hand ever since. I studied at the Handsworth College of Music in the West-Midlands for four years and went onto further education obtaining my diploma from the Open University in 1997. I have worked as a session guitarist and have a hefty number of live gigs under my belt but soon realised that the limelight was not for me. I became a teacher at the Classical Guitar Centre in Birmingham where I taught mainly classical guitar for more than ten years. I have been teaching ever since.

Goals:

One thing I learned very early on, is that no two pupils are the same; all of my learning packages are built around each of my pupils unique set of requirements. The methods I use to teach are tried and tested and have been proven consistently to be the most efficient and effective within the music industry. My current student exam pass rate, which can be verified on request, is 99%, with many pupils obtaining merits and distinctions. I strive to ensure that, each of my students receive the most suitable and appropriate learning experience regardless of their current skill level or ability.

Reputation:

Since becoming a teacher more than 30 years ago, I have built up a good reputation within the musical community of Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield; I strive to build on this each and every day. All of my students are given a unique identification code that can only be obtained by becoming a student at my guitar academy; this ensures that any review or testimonial on this site has been entered by a genuine pupil.

Classical Guitar

Encompassing the Trinity college of London's Classical & Plectrum grade initial through to grade 8 syllabus (2015-2019).

From beginner to advanced or just wanting to polish up your existing skills?

Every pupil at Musical Six Strings will undergo an initial assessment to determine their current grade level in accordance with the Trinity College of London (TCL) syllabus (2015-2019). An appropriate learning package will then be put together which closely matches the TCL curriculum for that particular grade with a view to ensuring that our pupils are always working towards meeting the standard required to take you to the next level in your guitar playing journey. The grading system begins at grade initial for beginners and continues through to grade 8; after which, you would be working towards further education such as a Diploma or higher.

Why use the Trinity grade system?

Having a Trinity grade certificate verifies that you have met the criteria required by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) and Qualifications Wales (QW), whose standards are set by the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF); credentials such as these are recognized around the globe as the industry standard in the music and entertainments industry.

Grades 6-8 are a minimum requirement for students hoping to be put forward for further education such as a diploma or higher. we encourage all of our pupils to work toward completing each grade but we also cater for pupils that are just aiming to hone there current skills and expand on their musical repertoire.

Beginner:

As a complete beginner you will be taken through the Alfred's system which has been renowned world wide for over 50 years as the most comprehensive and effective method of learning guitar. Beginner lessons are usually short, up to half hour, as there is a lot to take in the interim stages.

Our teaching methods have been tried and tested over the years and are consistent in maintaining our exam pass rate of over 99% with many pupils receiving merits and distinctions.

Sessions:

We run 30 minute, 45 minute and 1 hour sessions. We recommend beginners start with the half hour session as there is a lot to take in initially.

Prices vary depending on each pupils specific requirements.

Flamenco guitar

Included in the Trinity college of London's Guitar- Classical & Plectrum syllabus (2015-2019).

What is Flamenco Guitar? And it's relationship to the Classical Guitar

Flamenco Guitar shares it's roots with Classical guitar; therefore, having a good understanding of the Classical guitar is advantageous for anyone interested in taking up this beautiful and unique style of guitar playing. In Flamenco guitar, what is done with neck hand is often closely related to the Classical guitar apart from some specialised techniques such as Ligudos and chording; the hand encompassing the body is used to drive the sound out of the guitar, at times quite robustly but always passionately, with techniques such as; picado, rasgueado, abanico, arrastre, alzapua and golpe.

Interested?

As a beginner to the Flamenco Guitar we would always recommend that you take the Classical Guitar course we offer, as this will form a solid foundation and facilitate in obtaining recognized qualifications in accordance with the Trinity College of London's Guitar- Classical & Plectrum syllabus (2015-2019) in which all of the above Flamenco Techniques are covered in a well structured learning package; however, we do offer a more intensive course that is solely dedicated to the Flamenco guitar.
